Lost your job in the Philippines? A money plan for the first month
What to do with money after losing a job in the Philippines: separation pay, final pay, SSS unemployment benefit, loans and how many months your savings last.
Collect what you are owed
Ask for your final pay, unused leave, your pro-rated 13th month pay and any separation pay, in writing. Whether you get separation pay depends on the reason you left.
Work out your runway
₱110,000 against ₱27,000 a month is 4.1 months. Halve non-essentials, costs fall to ₱24,500 and you get 4.5 months. Plan for a four-month search.
Government benefits
Involuntarily separated SSS members may qualify for an unemployment benefit. Check eligibility and the claim steps on the SSS site. Keep your contributions up if you can, and look at voluntary payments if you freelance.
Loans
Talk to your lender before you miss a payment. Avoid new loan apps. Check any lender against the SEC list before you borrow.
