Building a credit history in Canada when you are new

How credit works in Canada, why newcomers start from zero, and plain first steps to build a credit score.

Why you start at zero

Lenders use Canadian credit reports. Without one, phone plans, cards and rentals can be harder to get.

First steps

Open a bank account. Get a card suited to newcomers or a secured card. Use it for small bills and pay in full each month. Late payments hurt more than anything.

Watch for scams

Never pay someone to "fix" your credit, and never share your SIN or banking details by phone or text.

Common questions

How do I build credit in Canada?

Use a card, keep the balance low and pay in full and on time.

Does my credit history from home transfer?

Usually not. Lenders look at your Canadian file.
