Credit card settlement or payment plan: which is better?
Should you accept a credit card settlement for less than you owe? How it shows on your credit report, what a payment plan costs, and how to decide.
What minimum payments cost
On ₹1,20,000 at 40% a year with a ₹5,500 minimum, you pay about ₹97,956 in interest over 3.3 years. Adding ₹30,000 a month ends it in 4 months with ₹9,559 of interest.
What a settlement does
A bank may accept less than you owe to close the account. The account is usually reported to credit bureaus as settled, which lenders read as a sign you did not pay in full. That can make your next loan harder or dearer.
The alternatives
Ask for a conversion to an EMI at a lower rate, a longer tenure, or a balance transfer. These keep your credit report clean and often cost less than the interest you are paying now.
How to decide
If you can pay a lump sum within a few months, ask for an EMI conversion and pay it off. If you truly cannot pay, a settlement may be the only way out. Get the terms and a no-dues letter in writing.
Common questions
Does a settlement hurt my credit score?
The account is reported as settled and it can lower your score and stay on your report for years.
Can I convert my card balance to an EMI?
Many banks offer it. Ask for the rate and fees.
Do I need a no-dues letter?
Yes. Always get it in writing after you pay.
