Lost your job? A money plan for the first 30 days
What to do with money in the first 30 days after losing a job in India: notice pay, EPF, health cover, EMIs and how many months your savings last.
Collect what you are owed
Ask HR for your full and final statement: notice pay, leave encashment, any pending bonus, and gratuity if you have five years of service.
Work out your runway
₹4,00,000 against ₹53,000 a month is 7.5 months. Halve non-essential spending, costs drop to ₹49,000 and you get 8.2 months. Plan on a four-month search.
Handle EMIs before you miss one
Call your lender before the due date. Ask about a short moratorium or a longer tenure to lower the EMI. A missed payment hurts your credit score, and the score decides your next job loan.
EPF and insurance
EPF rules allow a partial withdrawal when you are out of work, but check the current EPFO rules. Keep your health cover going and avoid dipping into long-term money for short-term costs.
Common questions
How many months of savings do I need?
Plan for a three to six month search and check the shortfall in the tool.
Should I withdraw EPF?
Only as a last step. It cuts your retirement savings and may be taxed.
Will gratuity be paid?
Usually after five years of service, or one year for fixed-term staff.
