Quarterly estimated taxes: due dates and how much to pay
When estimated tax payments are due, how much to pay to avoid a penalty, and a worked example.
The four dates
| Q1 (January to March) | April 15 |
| Q2 (April and May) | June 15 |
| Q3 (June to August) | September 15 |
| Q4 (September to December) | January 15 |
How much
Add expected self-employment tax and income tax for the year, divide by four. On $80,000 of profit that is about $4,708. Adjust as the year goes.
Safe harbor
Paying at least 100% of last year's tax (110% if adjusted gross income was over $150,000) generally avoids an underpayment penalty, even if you owe more at filing.
