ISA allowance explained: how much you can save tax-free

How much you can put into ISAs each tax year, the main types, and what tax-free means for interest.

The limit

The £20,000 is shared across cash ISAs, stocks and shares ISAs and others. Putting £10,000 in a cash ISA leaves £10,000 for others that year.

Why it matters

On £20,000 at 4% you earn £800 a year. A higher rate taxpayer could pay tax on part of that outside an ISA. Inside, none.

The 2027 cash ISA change

The Autumn Budget 2025 set a £12,000 yearly limit for cash ISAs from 6 April 2027 for people under 65. People aged 65 and over can still put in £20,000. Anything above £12,000 can go into a stocks and shares ISA. Check GOV.UK before you pay in.
