How it is worked out

The first £12,570 is tax-free (the Personal Allowance). Income tax is then 20% up to £50,270, and 40% above that. National Insurance is 8% of pay between £12,570 and £50,270, and 2% above that.

What changes the number

A pension through payroll lowers your tax. A student loan takes 9% of pay above your plan threshold (6% for a postgraduate loan). A wrong tax code can cost or save you hundreds of pounds a year. Scottish tax rates differ and are not covered here.
