Stuck in a loan app debt trap? What to do
If you are borrowing from one loan app to pay another, here is the real cost, your rights against harassment, and a plan to get out.
Why it traps you
A ₱40,000 balance at 36% a year costs ₱1,200 a month in interest. A ₱2,200 payment barely moves it. Add fees and rollovers and the balance grows.
Stop the cycle
- Write down every loan, balance, rate and due date.
- Stop taking new loans to pay old ones.
- Pay the highest rate first, minimum on the rest.
- Talk to each lender and ask for a longer term or a lower rate.
Your rights
Lenders may not threaten you, shame you to your contacts or use abusive language. Keep screenshots and call logs. You can complain to the SEC and the National Privacy Commission.
Where to find help
Look for a registered cooperative or a bank offering a consolidation loan at a lower rate. Avoid anyone who asks for a fee up front to “clear” your debt.
Common questions
Is it legal for an app to message my contacts?
No. Harassment and shaming are not allowed. Keep records and report to the SEC.
How do I check if a lender is legit?
Look for it on the SEC’s list of registered lending and financing companies.
Should I consolidate my loans?
If the new rate is lower and fees are small, yes. Compare the total cost.
